Can someone please explain how a birth certificate “proves” citizenship?

I have a certificate showing that a person of the name I use was born in the United States on the date that I claim as my birthday. But there’s nothing to connect me to that person. I cannot “prove” that I am he. Indeed with such a certificate, I could “prove” that I am my brother. And it would be easy to get a certified copy of his birth certificate.

We must challenge proponents of birth certificates to prove citizenship to prove their own citizenship!

(And I do not ignore that President Obama cannot “prove” that he is the person who was born in Hawai’i.)
